Today your Mind is Mainly the Mind of Others

Sylviane James

“She follows her instinct and flees. People judge her decision, her motive. But she finds her destiny”

WE ARE SO OFTEN CONSUMED BY THE FEAR OF FOLLOWING OUR HEART. WE LIVE A LIFE THAT IS CONSTRICTED BY CONVENTIONS, RULES AND FEARS DICTATED BY OTHERS.

WE ARE TAUGHT TO JUDGE OTHERS FOR BEING DIFFERENT AND CONSEQUENTLY FEEL THE NEED TO JUSTIFY THE DECISIONS AND ACTIONS WE TAKE THAT CHALLENGE CONVENTION.

This misalignment between what we want and what we feel we are allowed to want results in fear. Fear of being criticized, of being judged. Fear of failure, rejection or disappointment.

When we experience fear, the body tenses. This contraction of the body is beautifully designed to help us fight, flee or freeze. It is a survival mechanism that we all know well. We don’t have to think; it is embedded in us and our body knows exactly what to do instantly.

Our minds are shaped and coloured by conventions and rules imposed by others that tell us how we should be and what happens if we are not.

Without an avenue, for the adrenaline to be used up, our body remains tense. A tensed body is less open to love, life, inspiration and all of the emotions that make it thrive. Instead, it shuts down; shrinking to protect itself; and ultimately reinforcing the pattern of fear and pain.

So I ask you, what would happen if you did not follow conventions? What if you did not act the way people expect you to? What if you did not say the things people want you to say…then what? What does it feel like? Does it inspire you? Or does it frighten you?

If it frightens you, go further into this fear. What would happen? What is it that you would lose? What is it that you would gain if you were inspired instead of frightened? Can you dare to look past the fear that defines you and imagine the freedom of true self-expression. Imagine what it would feel like to be free of guilt, shame and fears.

To not live within the walls that others confine us to. Instead stretching beyond these walls into the unknown to discover what we are made of and to realize our full potential.

Today your mind is mainly the mind of others. It is the mind of the known. It is your history.

When we move away from what we know things to be, from the old, and embrace the unknown, the new, and the different, we have moments of insight that allow us to transform.

The key is to focus on these insights and allow them to become new patterns in your mind. Sometimes this will take repetition, other times, this will be an awakening; an insight so powerful because of the amount of emotion it creates. These emotions will indent your memory like a scar, a beautiful scar or a tattoo.

Life is movement, fluidity, always changing, always mysterious. Our minds create a unique filter or vehicle through which we experience and interpret the world around us. We have the power to release ourselves from the pain that stems from the walls of convention. Our responsibility is to the heart. To forget the heart is to refuse to feel. To refuse to feel is to fear to feel. To fear is to live with pain.

We will create new worlds, and life will keep on evolving, motivated by an irresistible desire to always be more.
